Fill the Gap! Reasons to consider a temporary contract.

For many businesses, the future is finally looking brighter. COVID-19 is being navigated and business drivers require support, although employers are cautious.
In my conversations with local employers, this topic is at the forefront and for some, the commitment of offering a permanent position feels uncomfortable given the year we’ve just had and the global state of the virus.
The solution I’m offering is the temporary market.
With an eye to the future, this approach can lead to a permanent position once confidence is built and value-added.

So, can temporary roles really be a route to permanent employment? – Absolutely!
There are advantages for both the employer and the employee. The best thing is you get to try each other out!
The reality can actually be similar to a standard ‘probationary period’ However, the ‘Temp to Perm’ feels like a comfortable conversation, more honest, fair and certainly relevant to the current employment landscape as we take cautious tentative steps forward.
The employer can try out some individuals, they can budget accordingly and they do not need to commit straight away.

I know what you’re thinking, how does it suit me, the job seeker? What’s really in it for me?
  • The temporary job can give the job seeker a chance to prove their value
  • It gives the job seeker a chance to “test drive” a job, an employer, or an industry. We are never sure until we get cracking what the reality looks like, the opportunity to ‘test drive’ the company and the culture gives an actual real insight on how you, the company, the team will gel together – It could help avoid a big career mistake!
  • It provides an income stream in uncertain times
  • It may be a segway into a new profession, or an industry-relevant for many as we up-skill into new areas, now demanded by the market

Of course, a down-side can exist for temporary work:

  • Often the permanence of a secure permanent role gives us security, emotionally & financially
  • Temp jobs are, by definition, short term, it can be intimidating and unsettling for some.

Considering the ‘shake-up’ Covid has presented us, many of us have had the core of our lives turned upside down, some have lost jobs, suffered financial hardship, or even just evaluated what’s important in life – A temporary role could certainly be a great solution to explore, as you develop and adapt to a new future for yourself and offer the chance regain control!
