Job search burnout is REAL
BURNOUT.
LIKE A DRAINED BATTERY THAT CAN NO LONGER HOLD ITS CHARGE OR A BURNT MATCH THAT YOU CAN’T RELIGHT
YES it’s THAT feeling. It’s REAL!
I’ve just seen an article pop up about job search burnout and it’s absolutely REAL! I’ve had at least 3 people in the last fortnight tell me they want to leave the search to me, as they just don’t have the bandwidth, and they are starting to lose motivation.
The market is flooded and being spoilt for choice has its downfalls. From endless applications to nonstop networking, job search burnout can be difficult to avoid.
Are you experiencing job search burnout? Here are some warning signs:
OVERWHELM
“There are so many jobs out there that it’s overwhelming. I want to be picky but I just don’t have the time or inclination to search through every job”
PROCRASTINATION
“I’ve started to procrastinate. How am I supposed to know the right cultural fit without researching the organisation first, and interviewing with them, and it all takes time.”
LACK OF THOUGHT
“I was applying for anything and everything to take the legwork out. Turns out that it wasn’t the smartest move as I ended up meeting with companies that just didn’t align with my values or career objectives. An utter waste of time”
Once you see the warning signs, step back and reassess your objectives, put some parameters around your allocated time and ensure your search doesn’t start to encroach on your personal time too much. And consider using a recruiter. Briefing someone who has connections and history with businesses in your field of expertise, or location, can provide you with a break from the hunt. A good recruiter will also be able to tell you about the departmental culture, the leadership styles and the opportunities that match your wish list. They can also contact you about jobs that aren’t on LinkedIn or Seek, opening up your eyes to businesses you may not have considered, or even known were hiring.
“Pursuing my next career opportunity online is truly daunting. I save many jobs but never apply because I’m nervous they might not be the right cultural fit for me. MME takes the risk away, using their insight and knowledge to help find the right fit for me.” Fiona G.
