So what can you do to promote gender equality in your workplace?

 

Encourage equal opportunities and equal pay

 
Employees undertaking the same work should always be paid the same, and you can ensure this by establishing an equal pay policy. Also encourage equal opportunities in terms of recruitment and promotions. Job advertisements should never be tailored more so towards one gender over another.
 
Avoid the mindset that women are best suited to support type roles and males to leadership roles. These stereotypes are what form the basis for gender discrimination. Hiring and promotions should always be due to an individual’s abilities, not their sex.
 

Provide training to your managers

 
Employers should have a thorough understanding of anti-discrimination law which prevents discrimination in the workplace. The law prohibits discrimination, harassment or victimisation based on many things, including sex. If you have a thorough understanding of your obligations when dealing with these issues, you are in a much better position to handle them.
 
Employers should also make sure their managers are educated in discrimination, including how to identify it, and which steps to take in order to prevent issues from occurring. Workplace polices should include a zero tolerance policy for any type of harassment or discrimination, and it is imperative all staff members are aware of these policies and the associated repercussions if not followed.  All employees should be made aware of the anti-discrimination policy, by including it in employee inductions and workplace handbooks.
 

Celebrate success

 
All employees deserve recognition for a job well done. It is good practice for an employer to show appreciation for the hard work performed. However, be mindful to celebrate achievements of all staff members equally, regardless of their position within the company or gender.
